In John Stienbaeck's novela The Pearl teaches that being greedy can destroy you. In the story Kino finds a great pearl and is overpowered with greed. Because he hangs onto the pearl and refuses to listen to his family he kills a man, loses his home, and runs away with his family and the pearl. His child ends up killed and Kino finally lets go of the pearl. Because Kino was too greedy he lost everything except his wife but still destroyed the person he once was. "It will destroy us all!..."  Jauna knew the pearl was evil and would only bring evil to them. Kino became greedy and refused to listen. "This pearl has become my soul..." The pearl destroyed who Kino was and because of Kinos greediness he hangs on to it.

In the story “The Day I Got Lost” by Issac Bashevis Singer the point of view of the story is first person with the main character Shlemiel. The tone of the story is humorous as many hilarious things happened to Shlemiel. “Sometimes I even forget my own address.” This is an example of how funny the story is. Connotations in the story like forgotten, blundering, and absentminded show the tone because they are funny words describing how ridiculously forgetful Shlemiel is and that is what helps to make the tone hilarious. “I am known to be an absentminded professor.” This quote with the connotation in it helps show the tone because it is hilarious how super absentminded the professor is. The point of view and tone affect me as a reader because the point of view lets me get to know Shlemiel better as a person and the tone lets me know what kind of story it is and what I’m supposed to be feeling throughout the story.

In the story “A Dark Brown Dog” by Stephen Crane the point of view is third person omniscient and the tone of the story is dark. “Whereupon the child lifted his hand and struck the dog a blow upon the head.” This shows the dark tone of the story and that it is third person. Connotations in this story like amusement and friend contribute to the tone of the story because despite their usually happy meanings they are used in a dark way for this story. For example the dog was the child's friend but the child still hit the dog for no reason. When the father was drunk he found it amusing to harm the dog and throw the dog out the window. The point of view of the story and the tone affect me as a reader because the point of view lets me get to know all the characters since its third person omniscient. The tone is dark and makes me feel as a reader sad and disturbed at the same time.
